A 32-year-old mother in Florida has been arrested after her 2-year-old son tragically wandered into the street and was struck and killed by a pickup truck.
Alejandra Segundo Cruz was taken into custody on Thursday and faces charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect resulting in great bodily harm. These charges stem from the death of her son, Damian Alexander Segundo Cruz, which occurred in October 2025.
The Tragic Incident
The incident took place on October 29, 2025, just before 4 p.m. outside Segundo Cruz’s home in the 8000 block of 49th Avenue North, located in the West Lealman area, about 120 miles southwest of Orlando. Segundo Cruz allegedly left Damian and several of his siblings unsupervised in the front yard of their home, which was dangerously close to the adjacent roadway.
At some point, Damian ran into the street and was struck by an oncoming Ford F-450 pickup truck. According to authorities, the truck, driven by a 34-year-old man, had stopped in front of Segundo Cruz’s home.
As the driver started to move, he did not see Damian, who had darted into the road. The driver immediately stopped and remained at the scene, speaking with law enforcement. He claimed that due to the child’s small size, he did not see him before the incident occurred.
Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, but Damian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Negligence and Investigation
The investigation revealed that Segundo Cruz’s decision to leave Damian unsupervised outside directly contributed to the fatal accident. According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, investigators noted that Segundo Cruz should have known the risks of leaving young children alone in a front yard near a busy roadway.
The affidavit stated that such a decision could lead to serious harm or death if a child were to enter the road and be struck by a vehicle.
Witnesses reported hearing shouting immediately after the crash, with family members rushing to the street as the severity of the situation became clear. While the driver was not impaired, and no criminal charges were filed against him, the investigation eventually led to criminal charges being filed against the child’s mother.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Alejandra Segundo Cruz is currently being held without bond at the Pinellas County Jail. She made her first court appearance on Friday, but it remains unclear when she will return for further hearings. The case has sparked outrage and grief in the community, as many question the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of Damian.
Community Reaction and Conclusion
The death of 2-year-old Damian Segundo Cruz is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of keeping young children safe, especially near busy roads. The investigation into his death took several months, but ultimately, the charges against his mother reflect the severe consequences of her alleged negligence.
This tragedy has left the family and community reeling, and it serves as a sobering reminder of the responsibility parents bear in ensuring the safety and well-being of their children. As the legal process unfolds, the case will likely continue to draw attention to issues of child neglect and the tragic consequences it can have.
