A tragic road accident in Louisiana has claimed the life of a young woman, raising concerns about pedestrian safety, especially at night. The incident happened in Ascension Parish and is currently being investigated by authorities.
Fatal Accident on Louisiana Highway
The accident took place on Sunday night along La. 44 in Ascension Parish. Jacqueline Merritt, a 20-year-old from Gonzales, was walking in the southbound lane of the highway around 9 p.m.
According to Louisiana State Police, she was in the middle of the lane when a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado struck her. The reason why she was walking in the roadway is still not clear, and investigators are working to understand the circumstances.
Second Crash Adds to the Scene
After the initial collision, the situation became even more serious. The Silverado came to a stop on the road, but moments later, it was rear-ended by a 2023 Ram 1500 pickup truck.
This second crash added to the chaos at the scene, although the main impact had already caused critical injuries to Merritt.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries
Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported Jacqueline Merritt to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she later died due to her injuries.
Her death has left the local community in shock, as another young life was lost in a sudden and tragic incident.
