A tragic hit-and-run case in Louisiana has led to an arrest after a pedestrian lost his life while crossing a highway. Authorities say the driver involved left the scene, but was later identified and taken into custody.
What Happened in Jefferson Parish
The incident occurred on April 22 at night on Louisiana Highway 48 near Edwards Avenue in Elmwood. According to police, a 43-year-old man from New Orleans was crossing the road when the accident happened.
He was reportedly wearing dark clothing while crossing the westbound lanes. At that time, a vehicle travelling in the same direction struck him. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but he sadly did not survive his injuries.
Driver Left the Scene
After the crash, the driver did not stop to help or report the incident. Leaving the scene of an accident, especially one involving serious injury or death, is considered a serious offence.
This made the situation more difficult for investigators, as they had to identify the driver without immediate information from the scene.
Arrest Made After Investigation
Through their investigation, Louisiana State Police identified the driver as Veleka Dabney-Swan, a 47-year-old woman from White Castle.
She was arrested the following day and charged with hit-and-run resulting in death. Authorities have not yet released further details about what led her to leave the scene.
