A 26-year-old Gonzales man, Mark Darby, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated flight from an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The sentence was announced by 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin.
Details of the Incident
The case stems from an arrest in April 2024, after Darby was involved in a brief pursuit with a Gonzales Police Department officer. According to the release, the officer had observed Darby committing a traffic violation, which led to a traffic stop.
Flight from Officers
When the officer attempted to stop Darby’s vehicle, the driver fled, and both Darby and a passenger ran on foot. Baton Rouge Police Department K-9 officers assisted in locating and apprehending both individuals.
Possession of Firearm
Close to where Darby was found, officers discovered a firearm. As a convicted felon, Darby was legally prohibited from possessing a weapon.
Legal Proceedings
Assistant District Attorney Adam Koenig prosecuted the case, and Judge Steven Tureau presided over the matter. Darby entered a plea agreement with prosecutors, which led to the 10-year sentence.
