A Gonzales teenager has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of a 17‑year‑old, the local district attorney’s office announced.
In March 2026, 18‑year‑old Jeaon Pindexter accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to manslaughter and obstruction of justice, according to an official news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office led by Ricky Babin.
At the time of the incident, Pindexter was only 16 years old, but prosecutors charged him as an adult because of the serious nature of the crime.
What Happened on the Day of the Shooting
On 11 November 2022, officers from the Gonzales Police Department were called to a convenience store after reports of a shooting. When police arrived, they found 17‑year‑old Mekhi Darville with a gunshot wound.
Darville was immediately taken to a hospital, but sadly he later died from his injuries. The circumstances around the shooting led to a full investigation, and Pindexter was identified as the person responsible.
The Legal Case and Plea Deal
After months of investigation and legal proceedings:
- Jeaon Pindexter made a plea agreement with prosecutors on 17 March 2026.
- Under this agreement, he admitted guilt to manslaughter — a lesser charge than murder — and to obstruction of justice, which means he interfered with the police investigation.
- Because of the plea deal, Pindexter avoided a possible life sentence but still received a very long prison term.
- The court sentenced him to 60 years in the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
- He was also given credit for time he has already spent in custody.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lana Chaney, and the judge in the case was Judge Steven Tureau.
Why This Case Matters
This case has drawn attention because:
- The victim, Mekhi Darville, was a teenager, making the case especially tragic.
- Pindexter was also a teenager at the time, just 16 years old, which raises important questions about crime involving young people.
- Prosecutors chose to charge Pindexter as an adult due to the serious nature of the crime and the outcome.
- A 60‑year sentence means Pindexter will likely spend most of his life in prison, given his age.
Impact on the Community
The community of Gonzales has been deeply affected by this tragedy. Shootings involving teenagers often shake local areas and prompt conversations about:
- Youth violence
- Gun safety
- Community support for young people
