A quiet neighbourhood in Los Angeles has been shaken by a tragic murder-suicide that claimed the lives of four people, including two young children.
The heartbreaking incident took place in North Hills, where residents were shocked to hear gunshots coming from a home on what seemed like an ordinary evening. Authorities say all victims died from gunshot wounds and appear to be members of the same family.
Police are still investigating the details of what happened, but neighbours are coming together to support each other during this extremely difficult time.
What Happened in North Hills
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) were called to the home around 8 p.m. on May 27, 2026, following reports of a shooting, according to KABC. When police arrived, they found four people dead inside. Authorities are treating the case as a confirmed murder-suicide.
The LA County Medical Examiner’s office has identified three of the victims:
- 6-day-old Ella Basmajian
- 2-year-old Alec Basmajian
- 31-year-old Khajag Basmajian
The fourth victim, a woman in her 30s, has not been publicly identified pending family notification.
According to KTLA, Khajag Basmajian is believed to be the father of the children, while investigators think the unidentified woman, likely their mother, was the shooter. Reports suggest she may have shot the children first, then the father, before taking her own life.
A neighbour told media the mother may have been dealing with mental health issues, but authorities have not confirmed this. There are also conflicting reports about who called the police. KTLA said neighbours reported hearing gunshots, while FOX 11 LA stated a family member made the call.
Family Background and Community Reactions
Khajag Basmajian worked as a software engineer at BlackLine. The company issued a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this devastating situation. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will not be commenting further.”
Neighbours have expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy. Undreal Turner, a nearby resident, said, “It’s just shocking to be in our neighbourhood. Something that drastic and devastating. Four people lost their lives today. We really need to check on the people around us, especially parents, and see if they need help.”
Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled seeing Khajag taking out the garbage around 7 p.m., hours before the shootings. “No one would have guessed he’d be dead an hour later,” she said.
On May 28, many neighbours left flowers outside the home as a tribute. Paula Smith, who lives a few blocks away, said, “We heard all the helicopters last night but didn’t know what was happening. To wake up and learn about the children—it’s heartbreaking. Go home and love the people you care about. If someone is hurting, reach out. Don’t be ashamed.”
