A major traffic disruption in Louisiana has caused delays after a serious crash involving two large trucks on one of the state’s busiest highways. The incident highlights just how risky certain stretches of road can be, especially when accidents happen in difficult locations.
What Happened on I-10
The crash took place on Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 117, just past the Butte La Rose exit. According to Louisiana State Police Troop I, the accident involved two tractor-trailers.
Authorities responded quickly to the scene, and a traffic advisory was issued shortly before 11 a.m. Officials confirmed that the right lane has been blocked due to the crash.
Traffic Impact and Delays
Because of the accident, drivers travelling in the westbound direction are expected to face major delays. Police estimated that the lane closure would last around three hours, but traffic could remain slow even after that as congestion clears.
This section of the highway is already known for heavy traffic, so even a single-lane blockage can create long backups.
Why This Area Is So Dangerous
The crash happened on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, which is considered one of the most challenging roads in the state.
This bridge stretches over 18 miles and runs across swamp land, connecting areas between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. It carries thousands of vehicles daily but has limited space for emergencies.
There are no easy exits along the bridge, and shoulders are narrow, making it difficult for vehicles to move around accidents. When something goes wrong here, traffic can quickly come to a complete standstill.
Advice for Drivers
Authorities are urging drivers heading westbound from Baton Rouge toward Lafayette to plan ahead. If possible, motorists should consider taking alternate routes before reaching the bridge.
Those already in the area should expect delays and drive carefully, especially near the crash site where emergency crews are working.
