A man from New York, Robert Schreiber, has been charged with several serious crimes after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house and stabbed her son while he was asleep. This attack took place on April 18, just one day after Schreiber’s breakup with the woman.
The Violent Attack on the Victim
According to a press release from the Suffolk County District Attorney, Schreiber, aged 42, was locked out of his ex-girlfriend’s home in Patchogue after their breakup. The next day, he allegedly entered the house through an unlocked window.
While everyone was asleep, he entered the bedroom of the 22-year-old son and violently attacked him. Schreiber kicked down the door and stabbed the victim seven times in the head, neck, and shoulder. The victim managed to escape and ran down the stairs, while family members called for help.
Schreiber’s Arrest and Legal Charges
When the police arrived, they found Schreiber in possession of a knife. He was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary, attempted assault, second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. Schreiber is currently being held in Suffolk County Jail with a bond set at $1,000,000.
What Did the District Attorney Say?
District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney commented on the case, highlighting the severity of the attack. He stated that domestic violence often escalates after a relationship ends and promised to aggressively pursue justice for the victim and his family. Tierney described the attack as a “violent assault on a young man in his own home.”
The Victim’s Condition
The 22-year-old victim, whose identity has not been made public, was taken to NYU Langone Hospital for treatment. He required multiple staples to close his stab wounds. Thankfully, he survived the attack, but the incident has left his family shaken.
Schreiber’s Legal Future
Schreiber’s attorney has not responded to media requests for comments. The accused man’s next court date is set for May 28. If convicted of attempted murder, Schreiber could face up to 25 years in prison.
