A North Carolina man has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting to killing his wife and dumping her body into a lake from a bridge. Prosecutors said the murder happened because he wanted to escape their arranged marriage, a case that shocked both the local community and the victim’s family.
The man, identified as 37-year-old Omar Matthew Ibrahim Drabick, received a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and concealing the death of his wife, 34-year-old Hadeel Ghadhanfer Hikmat.
Woman’s Body Found in Jordan Lake
The investigation began on August 29, 2023, when a boater discovered Hikmat’s body in Jordan Lake, located west of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Authorities later found blood, shell casings, and the victim’s jewelry on a nearby bridge. Investigators concluded that Hikmat had been shot in the back before her body was thrown into the lake.
Police quickly focused on Drabick after uncovering evidence connecting him to the crime scene and the victim’s disappearance.
Marriage Was Arranged by Family
According to investigators, Hikmat had moved to the United States about a year before her death after Drabick’s mother arranged the marriage between the couple.
Court records revealed that Drabick had reportedly become unhappy in the relationship and had been searching for ways to end the marriage. Authorities said he even told others he wished his wife would leave him for a wealthy man.
The tragic case later revealed growing tension between the couple before the deadly incident happened.
Last Night Together Ended in Tragedy
On the night of the murder, Drabick reportedly picked Hikmat up after her shift at Walmart, where she worked. The couple later went to eat at a Denny’s restaurant together.
Drabick later told a friend an unusual story claiming that after dinner, he and his wife met a man from Iraq at a park during the early morning hours. According to Drabick, the man allegedly convinced Hikmat to leave with him because she deserved someone wealthier.
However, the friend told investigators the story made no sense and believed Drabick was lying.
Police later determined that Drabick instead drove his wife to the bridge where she was killed shortly after 2:30 a.m.
Investigators Found Evidence Against Drabick
Authorities discovered several pieces of evidence that connected Drabick to the murder.
Investigators learned he had recently purchased the gun used in the killing. Police also found searches on his phone related to getting away with murder.
According to reports, the victim’s blood was discovered on Drabick’s shoes and inside the trunk of his vehicle.
These findings became important evidence during the prosecution of the case.
Court Sentences Drabick to Decades in Prison
Drabick was originally charged with first-degree murder but later received a sentence for second-degree murder along with a separate sentence for concealing the death.
The court sentenced him to 25 to 31 years in prison for the murder charge and an additional six to nine years for hiding the body. The sentences will run consecutively, meaning one sentence will begin after the other ends.
During sentencing, prosecutors described the situation as tragic and difficult to understand.
Mother Said She Felt Responsible
During the court hearing, Drabick’s mother reportedly expressed guilt because she arranged the marriage between her son and Hikmat.
However, the judge told her she should not blame herself for the deadly outcome, saying no one enters an arranged marriage expecting something so tragic to happen.
Defense attorneys argued that Drabick struggled with autism and lacked the social skills necessary to end the marriage peacefully. Before sentencing, Drabick apologized in court and said he was sorry “from the bottom of my heart.”
Case Raises Questions About Domestic Violence and Relationships
The heartbreaking case has sparked discussions about unhealthy relationships, emotional pressure, and domestic violence inside marriages. While arranged marriages are common in many cultures and often successful, experts say communication and personal choice remain important in any relationship.
The murder also highlighted how unresolved emotional struggles and resentment can escalate into violence when people fail to seek healthy solutions or support.
