A 20-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of Sam Altman, authorities said.
Fire Ignites at Property Gate
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. Friday, when police say the suspect threw an incendiary device at the residence, igniting a fire on an exterior gate. No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained.
Suspect Located Near OpenAI Headquarters
Roughly an hour later, officers responded to OpenAI headquarters after reports of a man threatening to burn down the building. Police recognized the individual as matching the earlier suspect description and took him into custody.
Charges Still Pending
The suspect was arrested, but formal charges have not yet been filed. Officials say it may take several days to determine whether the case will be handled at the local or federal level.
Motive Remains Unclear
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the attack. Authorities have not ruled out several possibilities, including a mental health crisis, a disgruntled individual, or a more serious targeted act.
Altman Responds Publicly
Altman addressed the incident in a blog post, sharing a photo of his family and expressing hope that it would discourage similar acts in the future. He also called for calmer public discourse, especially amid heated debates surrounding artificial intelligence.
Ongoing Investigation
The San Francisco Police Department’s special investigations and arson units are leading the case, with assistance from federal authorities. OpenAI confirmed it is cooperating fully and said there is no ongoing threat to its employees or facilities.
