A Louisiana man has been sentenced to federal prison after authorities discovered large amounts of methamphetamine hidden inside a seasoning container at a New Orleans airport during a TSA screening.
According to court documents filed by the United States Attorney’s Office, 41-year-old Emanual Harris pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine in connection with the attempted drug smuggling case.
The incident happened at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in September 2023.
Methamphetamine Hidden Inside Seasoning Container
Federal investigators said Harris arrived at the airport on Sept. 8, 2023, and checked a bag with United Airlines before attempting to travel.
During routine security screening, Transportation Security Administration officers reportedly became suspicious after discovering a container of Zatarain’s Pro Boil seasoning that appeared to be tampered with.
Authorities said the container had been glued shut and contained a taped Ziplock bag hidden inside the seasoning mix.
According to court records, investigators found approximately 442.2 grams of methamphetamine concealed inside the container.
Officials also discovered an additional 375.8 grams of pure methamphetamine during the investigation.
Federal Charges and Guilty Plea
Following the airport discovery, federal prosecutors charged Harris with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Court records show Harris later pleaded guilty to the charge as part of the federal case.
Drug trafficking charges involving large quantities of methamphetamine are treated as serious federal offenses due to the dangerous nature of the drug and its impact on communities.
Sentence Handed Down in Federal Court
On May 14, Harris was officially sentenced in federal court.
According to prosecutors, he received a sentence of 40 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.
The court also ordered Harris to pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
Federal authorities did not release additional details regarding Harris’ intended travel destination or whether investigators believed others may have been involved.
Airport Drug Smuggling Remains Major Concern
The case highlights the continued efforts by airport security officials and federal investigators to stop illegal drug trafficking through commercial airports.
Transportation Security Administration officers regularly inspect luggage and identify suspicious items during routine screenings designed to protect public safety and prevent illegal activity.
Authorities say traffickers often attempt to hide narcotics inside ordinary household items, food containers, and personal belongings in hopes of avoiding detection.
