A shocking incident took place during a peaceful snorkel tour in southern Hawaii, where a young tourist suddenly attacked a boat captain with a knife. What was supposed to be a relaxing three-hour trip turned into a frightening situation for everyone on board. The attack happened without warning, leaving passengers and crew in deep shock.
What Happened on the Boat
On Thursday afternoon, a group of people boarded a fishing boat near Kailua-Kona for a snorkel tour. Among them was Avery Nissen, a 21-year-old man from eastern Kansas. The trip had just begun like any normal tour, with passengers expecting to enjoy the ocean and marine life.
However, things quickly took a dangerous turn. According to police, Nissen suddenly attacked the 62-year-old boat captain using a fillet knife. The attack was violent, and the captain suffered multiple injuries.
Other people on the boat acted quickly and managed to stop Nissen. They restrained him before the situation could get worse. Their quick response likely saved the captain’s life.
Injuries and Medical Condition
The boat captain was seriously hurt during the attack. He suffered:
- A stab wound in the lower abdomen
- Multiple cuts on his head
- Injuries on his hands
After the boat returned to HonokĹŤhau Harbor, emergency services took the captain to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, doctors confirmed that he is in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Police Action and Charges
Police officers reached the harbor at around 3:21 p.m. after receiving information about the incident. As soon as the boat arrived, they arrested Avery Nissen.
Authorities have charged him with:
- Second-degree attempted murder
- First-degree assault
- Second-degree assault
He is currently being held on a bail amount of $1,570,000, which shows the seriousness of the crime.
Investigation and Unknown Motive
One of the most confusing parts of this case is that the reason behind the attack is still unknown. Police have not found any clear motive yet. There is no information suggesting any argument or conflict before the attack.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have more details about the incident to come forward and help with the investigation. Understanding why this happened is important for the case.
Court Appearance
Avery Nissen is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court on Monday. During this hearing, the court will begin the legal process and decide the next steps in the case.
Safety Concerns for Tourists
This incident has raised concerns about safety during tourist activities like snorkel tours. While such violent events are rare, it shows the importance of being alert even during leisure trips.
Tour operators may now look into improving safety measures, such as:
- Better screening of passengers
- Emergency response training for staff
- Safety tools on board
Passengers also play a role by staying aware of their surroundings and reporting any unusual behaviour.
