Many people know God’s name but not His heart. Some who preach the word don’t live by it, and that can be deeply upsetting. True faith, for most people, is about love, respect, and not harming others. Sadly, there are those who claim God’s name yet act against His teachings, and the results can be devastating.
Nebraska Father Sentenced for Baby’s Death
Ryan Greenwood, a Nebraska man who often posted Christian-centered parenting advice online, was sentenced to 65 to 80 years in prison for the intentional abuse and death of his 4-month-old daughter, Elizabeth Greenwood. His wife, Tanya Greenwood, was also arrested but has been deemed not competent to stand trial, with another competency hearing scheduled for May 14, 2026.
The Greenwoods, who live in Lincoln, Nebraska, welcomed their daughter in 2025. Tragically, just four months later, Elizabeth died from a severe brain injury caused by being shaken.
What Happened
Ryan Greenwood called 911 to report his baby’s death, claiming he had been “playing rough” with her, fed her a bottle, and put her to bed. However, Tanya Greenwood gave a different account, saying she came home from an errand to find her daughter crying like she had never heard before. She reportedly wanted to seek medical help, but Ryan refused.
Authorities later confirmed that Elizabeth’s death resulted from shaken baby syndrome. Tanya also claimed she had previously witnessed Ryan shaking their child. Court records show Ryan researched “shaken baby syndrome” days after his daughter died.
Christian Parenting Posts vs. Reality
Ryan Greenwood regularly shared parenting advice online, often linking childcare to Christian teachings. One post read:
“If you’re the one who takes care of your infant at night, clean the bottle after they’re done eating, because a clean vessel is ready for its next use. And that’s exactly what Jesus Christ does for us on the cross… every single time that you make a mistake, he will cleanse you from the inside out if you come to him with repentance.”
Despite these posts, his actions tragically contradicted the values he preached, highlighting a severe and fatal failure in parenting responsibility.
Court Outcome and Sentencing
On May 8, 2026, Ryan Greenwood was sentenced to 65 to 80 years in prison for intentional child abuse resulting in Elizabeth’s death. Tanya Greenwood was deemed not competent to stand trial, and her next competency hearing is scheduled for May 14, 2026.
This case is a stark reminder that parenting requires responsibility, patience, and protection of children’s safety. Faith and morality mean nothing if one’s actions harm the very lives we are meant to nurture.
