A Pennsylvania mother, Lauren Maloberti, is in court facing charges of murder after the tragic death of her 5-year-old adopted son, Landon Maloberti, in February 2023.
Landon’s death is alleged to have been the result of years of ab*se and neglect by his adoptive parents, Lauren and Jacob Maloberti. The case has shocked the community, and the opening statements in the trial revealed chilling details of the mistreatment Landon endured before his death.
The Death of Landon Maloberti
Landon Maloberti died on February 7, 2023, after being hospitalized for critical injuries sustained in what authorities have described as one of the most horrific cases of ab*se they have encountered. According to CBS Pittsburgh, Landon was brought to AHN Hempfield on January 30, 2023, where medical staff discovered a brain bleed and multiple bruises on his small body. Landon was in critical condition and died a week later.
Westmoreland District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli stated that Landon’s injuries caused “substantial pain” and led to impairment of basic functions, including his inability to stand, eat, or drink, and he ultimately lost consciousness. These injuries were consistent with extreme ab*se.
Allegations of Severe Ab*se
During the trial on May 5, 2026, opening statements and testimony began to reveal the horrific details surrounding Landon’s life and death.
Lauren Maloberti, his adoptive mother, has been accused of forcing Landon to drink from the toilet and isolating him from other family members. According to investigators, Landon was also reportedly forced to forage for food in the family kitchen after bedtime, as he was not being fed properly.
When Landon was taken to the hospital, he was slumped unconscious in his mother’s arms. Patient access specialist Susan Ghrist, who was present during the hospital visit, testified that when she looked into Lauren’s eyes, “there were no tears,” which only added to the chilling nature of the case.
Evidence of Ab*se
Further testimony from medical professionals painted a grim picture of Landon’s condition. Nurse Matthew Staub testified that Landon’s body was covered in numerous bruises, including several on his arms, legs, and chest.
There were also marks consistent with adult-sized fingerprints and knuckle bruises. A brain scan revealed catastrophic injuries, leading to the conclusion that Landon had suffered severe ab*se over an extended period.
Lauren Maloberti allegedly gave several excuses for her son’s condition, including claiming that Landon was “clumsy” and had behavioral issues, and that he had simply fallen. These excuses were rejected by medical experts, who testified to the clear signs of physical trauma that were not consistent with accidents.
Separate Trial for Jacob Maloberti
Jacob Maloberti, Lauren’s ex-husband, has also been charged with criminal homicide and is being tried separately. Both parents face charges related to Landon’s death, with Lauren facing a potential sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder.
Community Outrage and Support for Landon’s Family
The details of Landon’s death have left the community shaken, and the ongoing trial continues to shed light on the horror the young boy endured. Those who knew Landon remember him as a child who deserved so much more than the life he was given. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support Landon’s surviving family members as they cope with the tragic loss.
Our thoughts are with Landon’s family and friends as they navigate this painful journey toward justice. May his story serve as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children and seeking justice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
