A Mississippi man, Kurt Birdsong, is accused of killing two relatives in a deadly escalation of a long-running family dispute over land. Authorities believe the shooting took place on May 8, when Kurt shot and killed his brother Walter E. Birdsong, 62, and Walter’s wife Amanda Birdsong, 43, before taking his own life. The incident took place in Rankin County, Mississippi, at the family’s property on Monterey Road.
Ongoing Family Dispute Escalates to Violence
According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was the result of a dispute among family members over ownership of the land. The property had originally been purchased by the Birdsong family patriarch, Walter Earnest Birdsong Sr., as both a home and the headquarters for the family’s firearms business, W.E. Birdsong & Associates, Inc.
Following the death of Walter Earnest Birdsong Sr. in 2009, his sons Kurt and Walter inherited both the land and the business. Investigators stated that the brothers had been arguing for several days about who should control the property and business, leading to the tragic events.
Authorities Respond to the Scene
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Birdsong property shortly before 4 p.m. on May 8 after reports of a shooting. Authorities learned that two family members had been killed, and the suspect—Kurt Birdsong—had retreated inside the house. The sheriff’s SWAT team, negotiators, and technical response personnel were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Despite numerous efforts to contact Kurt, authorities were unable to reach him. The situation led to the deployment of armored equipment and a breach of the home. Inside, investigators found Kurt dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Walter and Amanda were also discovered deceased at the scene.
Ties to Firearms Business
The Birdsong family has long been associated with the firearms industry. W.E. Birdsong & Associates, founded by Walter Earnest Birdsong Sr., is known for creating a durable and protective coating system for firearms. After his passing, his sons took over the company, continuing the family legacy in the industry.
Authorities have requested assistance from the FBI’s Jackson Field Office, Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Clinton Bomb Squad due to the family’s connection to the firearms business and the involvement of firearms in the crime.
Ongoing Investigation
The deaths of Walter and Amanda Birdsong, as well as Kurt Birdsong’s apparent suicide, have left the family and community in shock. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office has called the deaths a “tragedy” and expressed condolences to the affected family and friends.
The investigation into the deaths remains ongoing as authorities work to understand the full extent of the events that led to the violent outcome. The sheriff’s office has urged the community to offer their prayers for peace and comfort during this difficult time.
