The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the discovery of what is believed to be human remains found in a storm drain on Tuesday afternoon. The remains were reportedly located inside a duffel bag found in the area of Annette Street and Benefit Street around 12:33 p.m..
Discovery of Suspicious Duffel Bag
Officers responded to a call about a suspicious duffel bag, which was found inside the storm drain near the intersection. An NOPD spokesperson stated that investigators believe the bag contained a human skeleton, although the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will make the official determination.
A local employee at a nearby daycare reported that the duffel bag was pulled from the drain after the discovery.
Children Discover the Bag
In a chilling twist, two children who were riding bikes in the area claimed to have found the bag. The children told WWL Louisiana that they opened the duffel bag and noticed what appeared to be a bone inside, sparking the investigation.
Investigation Status
The case is currently being classified as an unclassified death as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the remains. No further information about the victim has been released, and authorities have not identified any suspects at this time.
