“This piece of wood is 125 years old,” she says before revealing another older 2×4, which she estimates to be around 50-70 years old. She then shows a new 2×4 and points out the tightness of the rings in the wood, arguing that pine trees today are harvested before they have a chance to mature properly.
“Pine is actually one of the hardest hardwoods in the world, but it takes hundreds of years for it to become that way,” she explains. The speed of modern harvesting, she claims, prevents the wood from reaching the necessary density and strength.
