A Southern California woman has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the killing of her boyfriend and hiding his body for years.
Trista Spicer, 43, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Eric Mercado, 42, following a trial in San Bernardino County.
Violent Incident Inside the Home
According to court testimony, the killing occurred in October 2014 during an argument at the couple’s home.
Spicer told the court she struck Mercado multiple times with a cast iron skillet after he complained about a meal, then stabbed him in the neck with a kitchen knife.
Body Hidden for Years
After the killing, Spicer enlisted help to conceal the body. Prosecutors said Mercado’s remains were wrapped in a deflated air mattress and hidden beneath a concrete staircase in the backyard.
A brick structure was later built over the area, creating what investigators described as a “makeshift tomb.”
Discovery Nearly Eight Years Later
Mercado was reported missing in 2014, but his fate remained unknown for years.
In 2022, police obtained a search warrant based on a tip and discovered human remains at the property.
Authorities confirmed the remains belonged to Mercado.
Family Speaks Out
During sentencing, Mercado’s sister addressed the court, describing the emotional toll of not knowing what had happened to her brother for nearly eight years.
She remembered him as a loving father and a source of strength and inspiration for their family.
Defense Claims Disputed
Spicer testified that she had been abused by Mercado, a claim strongly denied by his family.
Sentencing and Aftermath
Spicer has been transferred to state prison to begin serving her sentence.
The case brings a long and painful chapter to a close for Mercado’s family, though they say the loss continues to impact them deeply.
