A woman was killed at a restaurant in Summerton after an umbrella reportedly became airborne during strong winds and struck her in the head and neck.
According to the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office, the victim was identified as Dana Winger, 56.
The incident happened Saturday evening at Driftwood Grill near Lake Marion.
Emergency Crews Responded to the Scene
Officials said emergency dispatchers received a call around 7:40 p.m. reporting a severe injury.
Crews from Clarendon EMS, Fire Rescue, and local law enforcement responded to the restaurant.
Authorities found Winger unresponsive with serious injuries to her head and neck area.
According to the coroner’s office, strong wind reportedly lifted an umbrella from a nearby table, causing it to strike her.
Emergency workers attempted lifesaving measures but were unable to revive her.
Officials later pronounced Winger dead at the scene.
Investigation Being Treated as an Accident
The coroner’s office confirmed no other injuries were reported during the incident.
An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Authorities said the investigation is currently being handled as an accidental death.
