The settlement would resolve a federal wrongful death lawsuit filed by Greene’s family, and the agreement is currently subject to approval by the Louisiana Legislature.

The death of Ronald Greene, 49, during a violent arrest in 2019 drew national attention after footage obtained by The Associated Press (AP) in 2021 showed Louisiana State Police officers punching, kicking, and using stun guns on Greene outside Monroe, Louisiana.
The incident occurred after a high-speed chase, during which state police initially claimed that Greene died after crashing into a tree during the pursuit.
However, the newly obtained footage contradicted this account, showing Greene being repeatedly stunned with a Taser, placed in a chokehold, punched, and dragged while shackled and handcuffed on the ground. Despite Greene’s pleas, officers did not provide medical aid.
The circumstances surrounding Greene’s arrest and death remained unclear for two years, with state police initially refusing to release footage of the incident. The graphic video sparked outrage and calls for justice, especially after it was revealed that Greene had been unarmed and apologized for fleeing from officers.
Federal Involvement and Justice Department Findings
