A Baton Rouge man was arrested after allegedly attacking an EMT by grabbing her neck and throwing her inside an ambulance, authorities said.
EMT Assaulted During Medical Call
On May 13, Baton Rouge EMS responded to a call at the intersection of Florida Boulevard and North Beck Street. EMTs were transporting 55-year-old Kenneth Armstrong to the hospital when he allegedly grabbed one of the EMTs and repeatedly threw her across his body, according to an arrest warrant.
The ambulance driver pulled over and called for backup. Officers arriving at the scene reportedly saw Armstrong holding the EMT by her neck and hair. It took five officers to restrain him while the ambulance continued its journey to the hospital.
Injuries and Medical Impact
Once at the hospital, the injured EMT reported feeling lightheaded. She was diagnosed with a vertebral artery injury, which affects the arteries supplying blood to the brain and carries a high risk of stroke. The EMT was placed on medical leave and will be required to work light duty upon her return.
Arrest and Charges
On May 15, Armstrong was arrested and charged with battery of emergency services personnel and resisting an officer. He was booked with a $3,000 bond. Authorities emphasized the seriousness of attacking first responders and the risk such actions pose.
