A Florida grandmother has been arrested after authorities say she became involved in a dispute between teenagers and helped escalate the conflict instead of preventing it.
The incident, which allegedly involved threats, a planned fight, and several teens trapped inside a park restroom, has resulted in criminal charges against both the grandmother and her 13-year-old granddaughter.
Florida Grandmother Arrested Following Teen Dispute
According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, 64-year-old Allyson Pease-Frankel was arrested and charged with false imprisonment after an incident at Ralph Carter Park in Palm Coast.
Authorities say the case stemmed from an ongoing disagreement between her granddaughter and several other teenagers. What began as a dispute among young people eventually grew into a larger confrontation that drew the involvement of family members and law enforcement.
The grandmother was later taken into custody and booked into the Flagler County Jail before posting a $5,000 bond.
Disagreement Began Days Earlier
Investigators said the conflict started on May 24 when the 13-year-old granddaughter allegedly attempted to provoke another girl into a fight at the park.
According to deputies, the teenager pulled the other girl’s hair before the two were separated. Later that day, she reportedly went to the victim’s neighbourhood and attempted to start another confrontation.
Law enforcement officers responded to the area but determined the incident was a verbal dispute and left after no physical altercation occurred.
At that point, authorities believed the situation had ended. However, investigators say tensions continued to grow.
Threats Allegedly Made Before Park Meeting
According to deputies, the situation escalated the following day when Pease-Frankel allegedly became directly involved in the dispute.
Investigators claim the grandmother said she would bring a pit bull to the park for the planned confrontation. Authorities also allege that the teenager made written threats to kill two of the other teens involved in the disagreement.
Those alleged threats later became part of the charges filed against the granddaughter in juvenile court.
Officials say both the grandmother and granddaughter then went to the park where the meeting had been arranged.
Teens Allegedly Trapped Inside Bathroom
When the group arrived at Ralph Carter Park, deputies say the five teenagers involved became frightened and ran into a public restroom, locking the door behind them.
According to investigators, Pease-Frankel pushed against the restroom door with enough force to cause it to bend, while her granddaughter repeatedly kicked the door.
Authorities said the teenagers inside had already called for help but were unable to leave while the confrontation was taking place outside.
The group allegedly remained trapped inside the restroom for several minutes until Pease-Frankel and the others eventually left the area.
Those actions led investigators to charge the grandmother with false imprisonment.
Sheriff Criticises Grandmother’s Actions
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly strongly criticised the grandmother’s alleged behaviour and said adults should set positive examples for young people during conflicts.
According to the sheriff, disagreements among teenagers are common, but violence and intimidation are never appropriate ways to resolve problems.
He stated that rather than helping to calm the situation, Pease-Frankel allegedly encouraged the conflict and supported her granddaughter’s actions.
The sheriff also used the case to remind parents and guardians about the importance of supervising children and teaching them healthy ways to handle disagreements.
Granddaughter Faces Juvenile Charges
While Pease-Frankel faces charges in adult court, her granddaughter is also facing legal consequences.
Authorities say the teenager has been charged in juvenile court with two counts of written threats to kill and one count of grand theft.
Following the incident, she was taken into the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
The juvenile case will proceed separately from the criminal case involving her grandmother.
Investigation Highlights Concerns Ahead of Summer Break
The incident occurred just as students across Florida began their summer holidays. Law enforcement officials noted that the end of the school year often leads to increased concerns about unsupervised activities among teenagers.
Sheriff Staly encouraged parents and guardians to remain involved in their children’s lives, know where they are spending their time, and discuss the consequences of poor decisions.
Officials hope the case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible adult guidance during conflicts involving young people.
