A Pennsylvania man, Robert Zimmerman, is facing charges after he allegedly set a fatal house fire following a romantic rejection. The fire, which resulted in the death of 44-year-old Brandy Phillippe and injuries to two other residents, was deliberately started by Zimmerman after his advances were rejected by a woman living in the residence.
The Fatal Fire
The tragic incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, May 3, at a residence on Bratton Avenue in Lewistown Borough, located between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Firefighters responded to the blaze at approximately 11:55 p.m.
The house, which had been sublet to several tenants, was engulfed in flames when responders arrived. Phillippe was unable to escape the fire and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Mifflin County Coroner’s Office.
The fire left two other residents injured—one man jumped from a second-floor window, suffering severe facial burns and internal injuries, while a woman fell from the same height, landing on the sidewalk below.
Witnesses to the fire reported hearing people yell for others to jump to safety as flames engulfed the building. A neighbor described seeing “orange flames coming out the kitchen window,” signaling the intense heat and danger.
Investigation Uncovers Zimmerman’s Motive
Law enforcement quickly determined the fire was intentionally set. Witnesses reported seeing Zimmerman at the scene just before the flames broke out.
According to witnesses, Zimmerman had professed his love for a woman living in the building, but when his feelings were not reciprocated, he became despondent and allegedly set fire to several items on the first floor of the house.
Zimmerman reportedly admitted to starting the fire and watching it burn from a nearby alley. Surveillance footage corroborated witness statements, strengthening the case against him.
Arrest and Emotional Response
Zimmerman was arrested at a nearby boarding house the following day. When taken into custody, officers noted that he smelled of ash and smoke. He also showed signs of a drug overdose, which led to him being taken to the hospital for evaluation before being transported to the police station for questioning.
During his interview, Zimmerman claimed he couldn’t recall the exact details of when the fire started but did make several statements about events leading up to and following the blaze. When informed of Phillippe’s death, Zimmerman reportedly had an emotional response, according to police.
Community Impact
The fire has devastated the small community, with neighbors expressing grief for the victims, including the family of cats that lived near the house and were killed in the blaze. The traumatic incident has left the area in shock, with residents grappling with the loss of life and the injuries caused by the fire.
Legal Consequences
Zimmerman is currently awaiting criminal charges for the fatal arson. Authorities have indicated that formal charges will be filed soon, and he is expected to face serious consequences for his actions. The community remains in mourning as the investigation continues.
