A family’s birthday celebration turned into tragedy when a helium balloon led to the death of their young son, and now the parents are speaking out to prevent similar incidents.
Parents Share Heartbreaking Story
Jamie and Carly Dunbar shared their story publicly for the first time on the British talk show This Morning on May 20, 2026. Their son, Joshua, had just celebrated his eighth birthday on April 27, 2024. The morning began with presents and family fun, but hours later, the couple found their son unconscious in his bedroom after playing quietly with a foil helium balloon.
Jamie Dunbar explained that he saw the balloon partially deflated on Joshua’s bed and realized the balloon was over his son’s head. He had to physically remove it and immediately began performing CPR. Carly Dunbar described the “raw” feeling of hearing her husband scream and running outside for help, overwhelmed by the shock of what had just happened.
Paramedics and air ambulance personnel arrived and worked on Joshua at the house before transporting him to the hospital. Despite their best efforts, he could not be saved. A post-mortem examination later revealed the cause of death was “consistent with asphyxia involving a helium balloon.”
How the Accident Happened
The Dunbars admitted they do not know exactly how the balloon ended up covering Joshua’s head but shared their theory.
Carly explained that the child may have bitten the balloon, causing helium to replace the oxygen and render him unconscious, allowing the balloon to cover his head completely. The couple stressed that Joshua had been calm and playing quietly, making the tragedy unexpected.
Advocacy and Petition for Helium Balloon Safety
In response to their loss, Jamie and Carly Dunbar are advocating for stricter regulations on helium balloons. Carly launched a petition on May 8 calling on the UK Parliament to take action against the sale of helium balloons, warning that they can be a “silent killer.” She emphasized that if there had been warnings or regulations in place, her son’s death might have been prevented.
The couple hopes their campaign will raise awareness and prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies. The petition has already gathered more than 3,000 signatures, and if it reaches 10,000, the government will respond.
Jamie said, “We just want to get the message out there, the awareness, even if a ban doesn’t happen, so people understand the dangers. One life taken is one too many.”

The Dunbars continue to honor Joshua’s memory by educating others on the potential risks of helium balloons, reminding parents and caregivers to be cautious even during ordinary celebrations. Their efforts aim to prevent what happened to their son from happening to anyone else.
