A Missouri teen, Ke’Montae Phillips, has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after he allegedly shot and killed his sister’s ex-boyfriend over their relationship “going sour”, according to police reports.
Details of the Shooting
The tragic shooting took place on March 10 in Kansas City, where Phillips, 19, allegedly confronted the victim—whose name has not been released—over a breakup with his sister. The incident unfolded in front of the victim’s mother, who spoke to police about the lead-up to the attack.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim and Phillips’ sister had ended their relationship. Phillips had allegedly confronted the victim in the days before the shooting, making threatening comments about the breakup.
The Events Leading to the Shooting
On the day of the shooting, the victim and his mother were walking near 55th Street and Chestnut Avenue when Phillips approached them on foot. The affidavit reveals Phillips produced a rifle-style weapon with a red laser light and began firing at the victim and his mother.
In a heartbreaking moment, the victim allegedly shielded his mother from the gunfire as they tried to flee. He was struck by the gunfire and collapsed. The mother performed CPR on her son while neighbors came outside to assist. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Evidence and Investigation
According to police, at least 35 shell casings were found at the scene. Surveillance footage from city cameras and dashcams captured the moments leading up to the shooting, including Phillips’ car circling the area where the victim and his mother were walking. License plate readers were used to track Phillips’ vehicle.
When Phillips was arrested, he denied any involvement in the crime. He claimed the person in the footage “looked like his twin” and initially didn’t recognize the victim in the photos. However, when shown a picture of the victim, Phillips allegedly identified him before being told by detectives that the victim had been killed.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Phillips is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond and has a bond review hearing scheduled for Wednesday. He is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 15.
Community and Family Reactions
The tragic incident has shocked the Kansas City community, and many are left mourning the victim’s loss. The case brings attention to the dangers of escalating violence in domestic situations, and advocates continue to call for stronger protections for individuals involved in abusive or dangerous relationships.
