A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Holmes County, Florida, where a 5-year-old girl died after being accidentally shot by her older brother while visiting a home with their mother.
Authorities say the children were visiting a house on Twin Lakes Drive on April 5, 2026, when the incident occurred.
How the Shooting Happened
According to John Tate, there were three siblings in the home — ages 7, 6, and 5 — along with an adult. At some point, the 7-year-old boy found a loaded gun inside the house.
He reportedly took the weapon into a bedroom where his younger siblings were and discharged the firearm, striking his 5-year-old sister.
At the time of the shooting, the children’s mother, Jamie Willis, was outside the home, while the homeowner was inside.
After the gun went off, the boy ran about a mile to his grandfather’s house, where deputies later found him.
Victim Dies at Hospital
Emergency responders rushed the young girl, identified as Ryleigh Kate, to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she died from her injuries.
Mother Shares Heartbreaking Message
Following the tragedy, the grieving mother shared an emotional message on social media alongside a photo of her daughter.
“Dear God; please bring my baby back to me!! How is this real?? Mommy loves you so much baby girl,” she wrote. “I wish I could just wrap you in my arms again!”
Friends and loved ones responded with messages of support as the family began to process the devastating loss.

Authorities say it is still unclear how the child accessed the firearm, and the investigation is ongoing. Officials will review the case and present their findings to the State Attorney’s Office.
Sheriff Tate emphasized that this tragedy highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership, especially when children are present.
“It is the gun owner’s responsibility to make sure that the guns are put up where kids cannot get hold of them,” he said.
