A woman in Alabama has been arrested after authorities say she used bear spray as a form of punishment on her children.

Incident Leads to Police Response

Police were called on March 8 after reports of a child running down the street asking for help. According to WBRC, responding officers found the child with a swollen face and irritated eyes. Officers then went to the home, where another child also reported being sprayed.

Investigation and Arrest

According to AL.com, the children initially told police they had been sprayed with bug spray. However, a search warrant later uncovered bear spray inside the home.

Authorities took both children to a hospital for evaluation. During follow-up interviews, one child said they had been sprayed in the eyes and nose. Detectives later obtained a warrant, and 36-year-old Christie Lashay Williams was arrested on April 2 on charges of child torture.

Dangers of Bear Spray

The Environmental Protection Agency classifies bear spray as a powerful pesticide that is stronger than standard pepper spray. Experts warn it can cause serious breathing issues and even permanent eye damage if misused.

Children Placed in Protective Custody

Authorities said Williams told police the children had been misbehaving. Both children have since been placed in the custody of the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

Case Status

Williams was arrested and later released on bond on April 6. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
