SHREVEPORT, La. – Amtrak officials are exploring options to expand passenger rail service across several southern states, particularly to accommodate the growing demand for transportation to new data centers in the region.
Expansion to Serve New Data Centers
Amtrak is looking to extend its services along the Interstate 20 corridor to help people commute to and from new data centers that are being built in the area. This includes a data center under construction in Richland Parish and others planned for Caddo Parish and Bossier Parish.
The expansion aims to provide an alternative to the heavily trafficked Interstate 20, making it easier for workers to access these new facilities while reducing traffic congestion.
Ongoing Study and Project Timeline
The expansion project is still in the early stages, but an 18-month study is underway to analyze the feasibility of the proposal. The study will explore various aspects of the project, including potential costs, routes, and the overall impact on the local and regional economy.
Connecting Over 14 Million People
If the expansion is approved, it would provide rail access to more than 14 million people across several southern states. The new rail line would offer travelers an additional option besides driving on the busy I-20 corridor, creating a more sustainable and efficient mode of transportation.
Currently, Amtrak’s Crescent route connects New Orleans to New York City, with a stop in Meridian, but the expansion could offer new stops along the I-20 corridor.
