A tense situation unfolded in Lafayette after a 19-year-old man was arrested following an incident involving a firearm that led to an officer-involved shooting. The event happened Saturday night in a crowded downtown area, shortly after Festival International, raising serious concerns about public safety.
What Happened During the Incident
According to Lafayette Police Department, the situation began as a verbal argument between two groups. The conflict quickly escalated when Jai’Quan Pierre allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it toward a crowd.
With a large number of people present due to the festival, an officer responded by firing a service weapon. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
Background of the Suspect
Authorities confirmed that Pierre was already out on bond at the time of the incident. His previous case is connected to the 2025 death of Gabriella Sharp.
Police also stated that Pierre had earlier been charged with video voyeurism in relation to that case. However, according to legal representatives, the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office has not filed formal criminal charges in that matter so far.
Concerns Raised by Police Association
The Police Association of Lafayette has raised concerns following the incident. Their counsel, Allyson Melancon, highlighted the risks officers face when dealing with large crowds and individuals with prior records.
She pointed out that Pierre’s history, including previous gun-related issues and pending charges like aggravated flight from an officer, should be considered carefully when making bond decisions.
Charges and Current Status
Pierre now faces multiple charges, including negligent carrying of a handgun, terrorizing, and aggravated assault with a firearm.
He has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail, with his bond set at $110,000.
