A Massachusetts community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two young siblings who were allegedly killed by their mother earlier this year.
Friends, neighbors, classmates, and loved ones recently gathered to honor the lives of 7-year-old Kai and 6-year-old Ella during an emotional funeral service in Wellesley.
As the legal case continues, many people who knew the children are focusing on remembering their joyful personalities and the happy memories they shared with others.
Community Honors Young Siblings During Funeral Service
A funeral service for Kai and Ella was held on Saturday, May 16, at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
The emotional gathering brought together family members, friends, classmates, teachers, and local residents who wanted to pay tribute to the young siblings.
Before the funeral, the church had also organized a community vigil in April following the children’s deaths.
Kai was a second-grade student, while Ella attended kindergarten at Schofield Elementary School.
Mother Faces Murder Charges
Authorities arrested the children’s mother, Janette MacAusland, in Vermont in April.
Investigators allege that she killed her two children inside their Wellesley home.
MacAusland later appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
According to reports, she allegedly admitted to killing the children before attempting to harm herself.
Authorities said she later arrived at a relative’s home in Vermont with injuries to her neck and appeared emotionally distressed.
Police reports also stated that MacAusland was involved in a custody dispute with her estranged husband at the time of the alleged killings.
Former Babysitter Remembers the Children
A former babysitter, Cale Darrah, shared emotional memories of Kai and Ella while speaking with local media.
Darrah described both children as full of life, happy, healthy, and loved by those around them.
She said she hoped people would remember the children for who they were rather than only focusing on the tragedy surrounding their deaths.
According to Darrah, the siblings had strong personalities, unique interests, and many friends.
Ella Remembered as Outgoing and Confident
The babysitter described Ella as a cheerful and confident little girl who loved the color purple.
She recalled how Ella enjoyed having her hair braided and was fascinated by makeup and fashion-related things like eyeliner.
Darrah said the 6-year-old had a mature personality for her age and was very comfortable expressing herself.
Friends and loved ones remembered her as energetic, caring, and playful.
Kai Remembered as Sweet and Curious
Kai, the older sibling, was described as more shy at first but extremely kind and sweet once he became comfortable around people.
According to Darrah, he loved books about planes, trains, and trucks.
She also remembered how he sometimes playfully hid her shoes around the house.
Both children reportedly loved spending time outdoors riding scooters and playing together outside.
