A Missouri woman who helped search for a missing 4-year-old boy and gave emotional interviews during the investigation has pleaded guilty to his murder, bringing a tragic case that shocked the community to a close nearly eight years later.
Quatavia Givens Pleads Guilty in Darnell Gray’s Death
On May 29, Quatavia Givens, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, abuse or neglect of a child, and abandonment of a corpse in connection with the death of Darnell Gray. Court records show that she was sentenced to life in prison along with an additional 15-year sentence.
Cole County Prosecuting Attorney Locke Thompson said Givens will be eligible for parole only after serving 30 years in prison. The guilty plea finally brought legal closure to a case that deeply affected the Jefferson City community.
Darnell Gray Was Reported Missing in 2018
The case began on October 25, 2018, when Givens contacted police and reported that Darnell Gray, a 4-year-old boy she was babysitting, had disappeared from his home. At the time, Givens was dating the child’s father, who was reportedly at work when the boy went missing.
According to investigators, Givens told police that Darnell’s backpack, two juice boxes, and some cookies were also missing from the house. Her account suggested that the child may have left the home on his own.
The report immediately triggered a large search operation involving local authorities, volunteers, and community members.
Massive Search Efforts Captured Public Attention
As concern grew over the missing child, hundreds of people joined the search. Authorities announced a reward of $10,000 for information that could help locate Darnell.
Officials described the young boy as wearing black-and-white pyjamas, a black coat, and red Spider-Man shoes. They also noted that he was missing his two front teeth.
Throughout the search, Givens appeared to be one of the most active participants. She searched neighbourhoods, called out Darnell’s name, and spoke emotionally to local media outlets.
During one interview, she said she considered herself a mother figure to the child and begged for his safe return. Her emotional appeals convinced many people that she was genuinely worried about the missing boy’s safety.

The search ended in tragedy on October 30, 2018, when authorities discovered Darnell’s body in a wooded area of Cole County.

Medical examiners found evidence of multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma and sharp force trauma on different parts of the child’s body. The report also concluded that Darnell had been smothered.
