A Louisiana woman has been arrested after authorities say she exploited an elderly couple she was hired to care for, allegedly stealing thousands of dollars through forged checks.
Arrest and Charges
Demyra Willis, 34, of Baton Rouge, was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation by the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.
She faces multiple charges, including 12 counts each of exploitation of the infirmed, forgery, bank fraud, and identity theft. Authorities said she is being held on an $80,169 bond.
Allegations and Timeline
According to deputies, Willis was hired in April 2024 as an in-home healthcare worker to assist an 82-year-old man in caring for his sick wife in LaPlace.
In May 2024, the couple’s son was alerted by a bank about suspicious activity on his father’s checking account.
Financial Activity
Investigators say that between April 15 and May 6, 2024, Willis allegedly forged and cashed multiple checks made out to herself.
In total, authorities claim she withdrew $3,250 from the victim’s account during that time.
