Traffic troubles in the Dutchtown area are getting worse as a major road project on Bluff Road continues. While the construction is important for long-term safety, many daily commuters are facing delays, especially during school hours. The situation has created frustration for drivers who now have to deal with heavy congestion and longer travel times.
Why Bluff Road Is Closed
The closure of Bluff Road in Geismar is part of a major infrastructure project led by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. The road is shut between Serenity Lake Lane and Alligator Bayou Road.
This closure started on March 9 and is expected to continue until May 4, 2026.
Because Bluff Road is an important route, its closure has forced traffic onto nearby roads, mainly Highway 73. This has created serious traffic jams, especially near schools like Dutchtown High, Middle, and Elementary.
Traffic Problems in Dutchtown
With Bluff Road closed, drivers now have limited options. Most vehicles are being redirected to Highway 73, which is not designed to handle such heavy traffic every day.
This has led to:
- Long traffic queues during morning and evening hours
- Delays near school zones
- Increased travel time by 15 to 30 minutes
- Stress and frustration for daily commuters
Parents dropping children at school and office-goers are the most affected.
What Work Has Been Completed
Officials have shared that a major part of the project has already been completed at Jim Bayou. Workers removed old drainage systems and replaced them with new ones.
Here’s what was done:
- 35 new box culverts were installed
- Old culverts were around 60 years old
- Inspections showed serious structural damage
- The new system improves water flow and road safety
According to DOTD, these repairs were necessary to avoid sudden road failure in the future.
Why the Project Became Bigger
Interestingly, replacing the culverts was not part of the original plan. However, once workers inspected the area, they found that the damage was too serious to ignore.
If the repairs were delayed, it could have caused:
- Sudden collapse of the road
- Emergency road closure
- Greater risk to drivers
So, officials decided to fix the issue immediately, even though it added more work and time to the project.
What Will Happen Next
The project is now moving into the next phase. This includes improving the road structure and making it safer for the future.
Upcoming work includes:
- Filling soil around the new culverts
- Raising the road by about 21 inches
- Building strong embankments
- Reducing flood risk in the area
These improvements are expected to make the road more durable and less likely to flood during heavy rains.
Detour Routes for Drivers
Since Bluff Road is completely closed, drivers must use alternative routes. The main detour includes:
- Perkins Road
- Airline Highway
- Highway 73
While these routes help keep traffic moving, they also increase travel time significantly.
