In a sensational development, a wealthy California farming businessman accused of murdering his wife allegedly attempted suicide shortly after the incident. Newly revealed court documents have also highlighted a massive ₹1,600 crore $200 million trust at the centre of the case.
Who Are the Accused and Victim?
The accused, Michael Abatti 63, has been charged with killing his wife, Kerri Ann Abatti 59.
Kerri Ann, a former beauty queen, was reportedly shot in the head with a high-powered rifle at the couple’s remote property in Pinetop, Arizona, in November last year.
Bitter Divorce and ₹1,600 Crore Trust Angle
Court filings reveal that the couple were going through a highly contentious, multi-million-dollar divorce at the time of the incident.
Significantly, the documents state that the couple jointly held a trust worth $200 million, and Michael Abatti was listed as the sole heir in the event of his wife’s death. This financial detail has become a crucial part of the investigation.
Suicide Attempt After the Incident
According to the affidavit, Abatti allegedly attempted to take his own life days after the shooting.
Authorities in Imperial County were alerted on November 23 after Abatti himself dialled emergency services from his farm in El Centro, California. He reportedly told responders that he tried to end his life due to “an incident involving his wife” and mentioned that his children were “going through stuff.”
How the Crime Was Discovered
Kerri Ann was discovered by her nephew inside her Arizona home, unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head.
The nephew told investigators he heard a loud noise before finding her critically injured. An autopsy report later confirmed the fatal nature of the wound.
Key Evidence Found by Investigators
Investigators uncovered critical forensic evidence at the scene:
- A “circular defect” was found on a window, suggesting a bullet entry point
- Authorities believe the shot was fired from outside the house
- Surveillance data from licence plate readers showed Abatti’s Ford truck travelling between California and Arizona around the time of the crime
Officials suspect that Abatti drove from California to Arizona to carry out the killing and then returned.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Michael Abatti was arrested about a month after the incident in Imperial Valley, California, and later extradited to Arizona.
He is currently being held on a bond of $5.5 million approx. ₹45 crore.
His lawyer, Owen Roth, stated that while his client is financially well-off, bail conditions must still be fulfilled. These include surrendering his passport, residing in California, and travelling to Arizona for court hearings.
Investigation Continues
Authorities are continuing to piece together the sequence of events, with financial motives, travel records, and forensic findings all forming key parts of the case. More details are expected as the trial process moves forward.
