Bookkeeper arrested and accused of stealing from Metairie construction firm

Authorities in Louisiana have arrested Michelle Miller, a 52-year-old bookkeeper, for allegedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a construction company where she worked.

How the Case Came to Light

Investigators with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office say the case began in January after the company’s owner was alerted by his bank about a suspicious check worth $5,265. The check, reportedly issued by Miller and made payable to cash, raised concerns and was stopped before being processed.

Alleged Fraud Scheme

After reviewing company records, the owner reportedly found multiple suspicious checks issued between July 2025 and January 2026. Authorities say at least 18 checks were fraudulently written, with amounts ranging from $525 to $5,200, totaling around $44,552.

Investigators claim Miller had exclusive access to both the company’s physical checks and the software used to issue them, making her a key suspect. The signatures on the checks were also said to be inconsistent with the owner’s.

Charges Filed

Miller now faces serious charges, including theft valued over $25,000, bank fraud, and 110 counts of forgery. Officials have not yet confirmed whether additional fraudulent transactions were discovered beyond those initially identified.

Current Status

Miller is currently being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna, with bail set at $320,000.
