Police from the Montebello Police Department arrived at the scene around 4:30 a.m., finding Borquez and a man with severe burns outside the home. The detached house was fully engulfed in flames. Both the woman and the man were taken to a hospital, but they later died from their injuries. Firefighters discovered Atriel inside the home, who did not survive.
Arson investigators and detectives spent hours examining the burned apartment to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities initially had no suspects but later identified the man who died in the blaze as the suspected perpetrator. Police described the incident as likely related to domestic violence.
