In an unexpected and heartwarming turn of events, a California mom gave birth in the back of a moving ambulance, and now, she and her family are sharing their incredible story of how their baby made a speedy entrance into the world.
Unexpected Labor
Yesenia Avila, 38 weeks pregnant with her second child, went to her prenatal doctor’s appointment the day before, where she received no indication that she was in labor or that delivery was imminent. Her doctor assured her that she still had a few weeks left before her baby would arrive.
However, everything changed the next morning when Avila was getting out of the shower. She suddenly felt an overwhelming sensation, a sign that her baby was coming much sooner than expected. Her husband was at work, so her sister-in-law rushed her into the car, and they headed to the hospital. But, as often happens with emergency situations, they didn’t make it in time.
Traffic and Contractions
As Avila sat in traffic on the California 22 highway, her contractions became more frequent and intense, prompting her sister-in-law to call 911. “Her contractions went from five minutes apart to three minutes apart. I don’t think we’re gonna be able to make it,” she told the dispatcher.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched, and Orange County Fire Authority crews arrived to assist.
The Delivery in the Ambulance
Fire Captain Paramedic Greg Williams and his team managed to navigate through heavy traffic to reach Avila. As they got her into the back of the ambulance, Avila’s labor was progressing quickly. She felt the overwhelming urge to push, signaling that the baby was ready to be born.
“I was like no, I called you just to escort me to the hospital. Try to get there. We can make it,” Avila recalled. “And he’s like ‘No, the baby’s coming.’”
Minutes later, in the moving ambulance, Avila gave birth to her son, Emeric. Despite the unexpected nature of the delivery, everything went smoothly, and the baby arrived safely.
The Father Missed the Birth
Avila’s husband, who was driving separately, got the call that his wife had already given birth. “I was driving and I get the call. It’s just like, you know what, just take it easy. The baby’s here. I was like what? I missed the whole delivery?” he shared.
Although he missed the birth, he was relieved that both his wife and their baby were safe and healthy.
Thanking the Heroic Firefighter
For weeks after the birth, Avila and her husband tried to track down the firefighter who helped deliver their son, wanting to express their gratitude. On April 14, 2026, they finally got the chance to thank Captain Greg Williams in person at the firehouse.
“I just wanted to thank him because it meant a lot to me,” Avila said, standing alongside Williams. The firefighter, who was clearly touched by the gesture, said, “We see a lot of the other side of things, so to see life, to see a baby being born, it’s something to celebrate for sure.”
A Special Connection
The Orange County Fire Authority shared the heartwarming story and photos of the family meeting Williams on its Facebook page, jokingly hinting that baby Emeric might one day wear a firefighter shirt, just like Williams. The story serves as a reminder of the special bonds formed between first responders and the families they help.
