Gio and his girlfriend, Mercedes Solano, were walking across the street when the vehicle, driven by Mercado, veered into the crosswalk and struck Gio. Solano recalled the shocking moment, describing it as feeling like an explosion as everything unfolded in an instant. Tragically, Gio died from the impact, and Solano was injured by flying debris but survived.

After hitting the teen, Mercado’s car continued off the road, crashing into a nearby flower shop. Miraculously, the shop had closed early that evening, potentially saving the lives of those inside.
