A Canadian couple, Becky Hamber (46) and Brandy Cooney (44), is facing murder charges after allegedly torturing their 12-year-old foster child, known only as LL, to death. The shocking details of the case were revealed during the closing statements of their explosive murder trial.
Alleged Abuse and Death of Foster Child
Prosecutors revealed that in the days leading up to LL’s death, Hamber and Cooney exchanged text messages that included disturbing content, with one message reading “shiver shiver dumb f–k”. These texts allegedly reflected their hatred for the child, and prosecutors argued they showed the couple’s knowledge of the abuse they were inflicting on him.
LL’s body was found in December 2022 in the couple’s Ontario basement, soaking wet and emaciated. Authorities stated that he was about the size of an average 6-year-old and believed he died from hypothermia or cardiac arrest caused by severe malnourishment.
Evidence of Abuse and Neglect
Prosecutors presented evidence that suggested the couple had been abusing LL for months prior to his death. Texts sent between the couple a month before the child’s death reportedly indicated that they knew they were harming him and admitted to their malice. One such message allegedly read, “Unfortunately my thoughts [are] he is suddenly going to die and im going to jail,” sent from Cooney to Hamber.
The couple had been fostering LL and his younger brother since 2017 and were in the process of adopting them, despite their long history of abusive behavior. They were accused of isolating the brothers from each other and forcing them to live in filthy conditions, including having LL sleep on a cot often covered in vomit, which was only cleaned with a wipe.
A social worker testified that when visiting the home, there was often vomit everywhere, and the couple claimed that LL’s eating problems were due to an eating disorder that caused him to vomit food and lick it off the floor. Both boys were allegedly forced to wear wetsuits and hockey helmets regularly, with Hamber and Cooney claiming this was to prevent them from hurting themselves or making messes.
Defense Arguments
Hamber and Cooney’s defense argued that they had acted in the best interest of the boys, claiming the children were difficult to care for due to their complex behavioral needs. The defense further asserted that childcare and health professionals were regularly checking on the children and never reported concerns regarding their care.
Court Proceedings and Future Verdict
Unlike a typical trial, there is no jury in this case. The fate of Hamber and Cooney will be decided by a judge, following the closing arguments made on Friday. They face charges of murder, failing to provide the necessaries of life, assault with a weapon, and confinement.
The Impact on the Foster Care System
The case has drawn attention to the need for greater scrutiny of foster care arrangements and better protections for vulnerable children, especially in cases where the system is intended to provide care and safety. Authorities have emphasized the importance of reporting and intervening in situations where abuse and neglect are suspected.
