A California man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the death of his 8-month-old daughter, bringing an end to a heartbreaking child ab*se case that dates back to 2020.
Father Sentenced in Death of Infant Daughter
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced on May 29 that 36-year-old Jesse Manuel Figueroa had been sentenced for killing his infant daughter, known as Baby Raina. Earlier this year, a jury found him guilty in connection with the child’s death.
The case shocked the local community because of the severe injuries suffered by the baby and the disturbing history of ab*se uncovered during the investigation.
Baby Raina Was Taken to a Fire Station Unconscious
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on July 4, 2020, while Baby Raina was in Figueroa’s care. Authorities said he brought the infant to a fire station after she became unconscious and blood was seen coming from her nose.
Emergency responders quickly arranged for the baby to be transported to a hospital, where doctors fought to save her life. Despite several days of intensive medical treatment, Baby Raina died from her injuries.
Medical staff who examined the infant noticed a bruise on her face that appeared to be in the shape of an adult hand, raising immediate concerns about possible ab*se.
Investigation Revealed History of Domestic Violence
As investigators looked deeper into the case, they uncovered allegations of violence and ab*se involving Figueroa and his family.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Figueroa had previously beaten and strangled Baby Raina’s mother. Investigators also learned that he allegedly ab*sed the couple’s two other young children by forcing them to kneel on rice as a form of punishment.
Authorities further revealed that there was an active restraining order against Figueroa at the time of Baby Raina’s death. The order reportedly prohibited him from being alone with the infant.
Family Barbecue Led to Tragic Outcome
Reports indicate that on the day Baby Raina suffered her fatal injuries, Figueroa convinced the child’s mother to allow him to take the baby to a family barbecue.
What began as a routine family gathering ended in tragedy. Hours later, the infant was rushed for emergency medical care after sustaining severe injuries.
The circumstances surrounding that day became a key focus of the investigation and subsequent trial.
Autopsy Revealed Severe Head Trauma
An autopsy later determined that Baby Raina died from blunt force trauma to the head. Prosecutors stated that the injuries were so severe that they caused the baby’s brain to shift within her skull.
Medical experts ruled the death a homicide, confirming that the injuries were not the result of an accident.
The findings played a major role in securing Figueroa’s conviction and sentence.
Emotional Statement From Baby Raina’s Grandfather
During court proceedings, Baby Raina’s family shared the pain they have endured since losing the infant.
In a victim impact statement, the baby’s grandfather spoke about the family’s grief and the importance of remembering Raina as more than just a victim in a criminal case.
He said that Raina was deeply loved and deserved the chance to grow up and live a full life. His statement highlighted the lasting emotional impact the tragedy has had on those who knew and loved her.
Court Hands Down 25 Years to Life Sentence
Following his conviction earlier this year, Jesse Manuel Figueroa was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the killing of his daughter.
Prosecutors said the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and provides a measure of justice for Baby Raina and her family.
The case serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of child ab*se and domestic violence. While the sentence brings legal closure, it cannot undo the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
