Charges against a man accused of killing a crossing guard have been enhanced after detectives discovered a prior DWI arrest

A Denham Springs man, Darren Goudeau, 64, has been arrested for vehicular homicide after allegedly striking and killing a crossing guard outside Gray’s Creek Elementary while driving under the influence on Thursday.

Goudeau was initially booked on charges of vehicular homicide and first-offense DWI. However, on Friday, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) confirmed that Goudeau had been previously arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) in a neighboring parish in September 2022. As a result, his DWI charge for Thursday’s incident was upgraded to a second-offense DWI charge.

Victim Remembered by Community

The victim, Katy Wells, had worked for Livingston Parish schools and the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office for 40 years. Most recently, she served as a crossing guard at Gray’s Creek Elementary and Seventh Ward Elementary.

Following the tragic crash, the local community showed their support by leaving flowers and balloons at a makeshift memorial near the crash site.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek justice for Wells and her family.
