A tragic and senseless shooting in South Carolina has ended with a life prison sentence for the man responsible for killing an 8-year-old boy who was visiting the state on vacation. The child, Quarius Dunham, was riding in a car with his family when a man randomly fired at passing vehicles.
The heartbreaking incident shocked communities in both South Carolina and New Hampshire, where the young boy lived. After years of legal proceedings, the gunman has now pleaded guilty and received a life sentence.
South Carolina Man Sentenced for Killing 8-Year-Old Boy
Charles Montgomery Allen, 40, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.
The sentencing took place in Florence County, South Carolina, where Allen admitted responsibility for the deadly shooting that killed 8-year-old Quarius Dunham.
In addition to the life sentence for murder, the court also sentenced Allen to 30 years in prison for each of the five attempted murder charges.
The sentences came after Allen formally pleaded guilty in court on Thursday.
Random Shooting Targeted Passing Vehicles
The shooting happened on May 28, 2022, on Long Old River Road in Florence County.
According to investigators, Allen was outside his home firing a rifle and shotgun at passing vehicles without any clear reason.
Authorities described the attack as completely random.
Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye said at the time that there appeared to be no motive behind the shooting.
Law enforcement officials also indicated that Allen had a history of criminal issues and may have been under the influence of drugs during the attack.
Child Was Visiting on Family Vacation
Quarius Dunham was visiting South Carolina with his family from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The young boy was riding in a vehicle with family members when their car passed by Allen’s home.
During the shooting, a bullet struck Quarius in the neck.
Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
After medical efforts failed, he was later taken off life support.
Other Victims Were Injured
Authorities said Allen fired at several vehicles during the incident.
In the same car as Quarius, a woman was also shot but survived her injuries.
Allen also fired at two other vehicles traveling on the road.
In one of those vehicles was the child’s father, who was also struck by gunfire but survived.
Investigators said the shootings put multiple lives at risk and could have resulted in even more casualties.
Arrest and Investigation
After the shooting, SWAT team members responded to the scene.
Allen eventually returned to his home, where officers arrested him.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a large cache of weapons inside the residence.
Officials described the attack as one of the most heartbreaking cases they had seen.
Community Grieves the Loss
Quarius Dunham was a third-grade student at Little Harbour School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Following his death, the school district released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
School officials said the tragedy affected the entire community and offered support to students and staff.
They described Quarius as a young student whose death deeply saddened everyone who knew him.
Court Hearing and Apology
During the sentencing hearing, Allen’s defense attorney told the court that his client accepted responsibility for his actions.
The lawyer said Allen lowered his head in shame when he learned that a child had died.
Allen also apologized in court.
A relative of the defendant addressed the victim’s family, offering prayers and expressing sympathy for their loss.
