A Cincinnati Police Department officer is mourning the loss of his 26-year-old son, Nicholas Dent, who was fatally shot in New Orleans early on Saturday morning. Family members say that Nicholas was found in the driver’s seat of his car, shortly after finishing his shift at a sports bar. Investigators have indicated that the shooting appears to have resulted from an encounter that quickly turned violent.
Fatal Shooting After Offering a Ride
According to Shawn Dent, Nicholas’s father, who is a neighborhood liaison officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, the tragedy occurred just after 5 a.m. Nicholas had reportedly given someone a ride home when the incident took place. Family members believe that the shooting may have been part of a robbery that escalated into violence, but authorities have not released any details regarding a potential suspect.
Fundraiser Launched to Support the Family
In the wake of the tragedy, the Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has set up a fundraiser to assist the Dent family with funeral and memorial expenses.
The FOP, through President Ken Kober, shared a GiveSendGo link with a goal of raising $15,000. By Saturday evening, several thousand dollars had been raised in support of the family. The FOP also pointed out that the shooting occurred on what would have been Nicholas’s 26th birthday.
Background and Family Ties to Cincinnati
Nicholas Dent graduated with honors from Winton Woods High School and worked in the hospitality industry. His father, Shawn Dent, has deep ties to law enforcement, serving as a neighborhood liaison with the Cincinnati Police Department.
The family also shared that Shawn Dent previously worked for the New Orleans Police Department before his current role in Cincinnati. The family has requested privacy as investigators in New Orleans continue their work on the case.
Ongoing Investigation
The New Orleans Police Department is continuing its investigation into the shooting but has not yet released additional details, including a suspect description. The case has attracted attention in both Cincinnati and New Orleans due to the family’s ties to law enforcement.
Authorities are actively interviewing witnesses, and anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact the New Orleans Police Department.
