The Congressional Black Caucus is calling on major corporations across the United States to oppose redistricting efforts in Republican-led states that could reduce majority-Black congressional districts.
In a letter sent Tuesday to more than 250 companies, caucus members described the redistricting plans as coordinated attempts to weaken Black political representation and voting power.
The lawmakers urged companies to publicly speak out against the efforts.
Companies Previously Supported Voting Rights Efforts
Many of the companies receiving the letter previously supported voting rights legislation and racial justice initiatives.
Several businesses were part of the 2021 Business for Voting Rights coalition, which backed the proposed John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
Companies connected to that effort included Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Tesla, Salesforce, Target, PayPal, Intel, and Starbucks.
Lawmakers Say Black Representation Is at Risk
The caucus said several Republican-led states have moved to redraw congressional maps after a recent Supreme Court ruling weakened part of the Voting Rights Act.
Lawmakers argue the changes could reduce the number of districts represented by Black members of Congress.
Yvette Clarke, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, said corporations that benefited from Black consumers and workers should not stay silent while Black political power is being reduced.
Calls for Public Action From Corporations
The letter asks companies to:
| Request | Details |
|---|---|
| Publicly condemn redistricting efforts | Speak against maps that reduce Black representation |
| Meet with caucus members | Discuss protecting voting rights |
| Disclose political donations | Reveal contributions to politicians involved in redistricting |
Lawmakers also want companies to clarify whether their previous commitments to racial justice and democracy still apply today.
Patagonia Supports the Caucus Message
Among the companies contacted, Patagonia publicly supported the caucus’ concerns.
A company executive said healthy businesses depend on a healthy democracy and defended efforts to protect fair elections and representation.
Most other companies contacted reportedly did not respond publicly to requests for comment.
Caucus Also Targets Sports and Universities
The Congressional Black Caucus recently encouraged Black athletes to consider boycotting public universities in states accused of redrawing maps to eliminate districts represented by Black lawmakers.
Some caucus members have also suggested mass protests and future federal voting rights legislation may be needed.
Debate Continues Over Redistricting
President Donald Trump previously supported mid-decade congressional redistricting efforts in states such as Texas.
Since then, several Republican-led states have moved to redraw congressional districts as political battles over representation continue ahead of upcoming elections.
Lawmakers from the Congressional Black Caucus say the issue is ultimately about political power, voting rights, and representation for minority communities.
