Houston’s famous Viet-Cajun food scene has received a major boost with the opening of a newly redesigned restaurant in Asiatown.
Two popular concepts—Crawfish Cafe and Pho Prime—have launched a large, dual-concept dining space that brings Vietnamese comfort food and Gulf Coast seafood together in one vibrant location. The new 10,000-square-foot restaurant sits at 11209 Bellaire Boulevard and represents a major upgrade for both brands.
A New Home for Houston’s Viet-Cajun Cuisine
The new restaurant is operated by Mamba Hospitality Group, founded by Kiet Duong and Julie Nguyen. According to Duong, the opening celebrates the cultural mix that defines Houston’s food scene.
The restaurant combines the menus of Crawfish Cafe and Pho Prime into one shared dining space. This setup allows customers to order dishes from both concepts in a single visit.
That means guests can enjoy a bowl of pho or a banh mi sandwich alongside a spicy seafood boil—an experience that reflects Houston’s famous Viet-Cajun culinary tradition.
Crawfish Cafe originally opened in 2013 and quickly became a local favorite for its seafood boils packed with bold Cajun spices and Vietnamese flavors. The new location marks one of the brand’s biggest expansions so far.
Unique Dual-Concept Dining Experience
One of the standout features of the new restaurant is its seamless dual-concept design.
Instead of separating the two restaurants completely, the space allows diners to mix and match items from both menus. For example, guests can combine:
- Vietnamese pho with Cajun seafood boils
- Banh mi sandwiches with fried seafood platters
- Vermicelli bowls with buttery crawfish
This flexible ordering system gives customers far more choices than a typical single-concept restaurant.
Design Inspired by Vietnam and New Orleans
The interior design of the restaurant was carefully planned to highlight the cultural fusion behind Viet-Cajun cuisine.
Owners worked with Houston Design and Construction designer Daniel Chen to create a space that blends Vietnamese heritage with the vibrant atmosphere of New Orleans.
Several design elements help tell this story, including:
- Large murals inspired by Bourbon Street
- Bamboo décor and woven Vietnamese basket boats
- Street-food carts and traditional leaf hats
- Trolley-style booths inspired by New Orleans transit
- Fleur-de-lis archways
Two massive 20-foot murals created by Houston artist Donkeeboy serve as focal points inside the dining area.
Another standout feature is a hexagon skylight space called the “Viet-Cajun Village,” which fills the room with natural light and can also be used for private events.
New Signature Viet-Cajun Sauce
To celebrate the opening, Crawfish Cafe has introduced a new signature sauce called Viet-Cajun.
The sauce blends citrus flavors like oranges and lemons with butter, garlic, and spices. It aims to balance Vietnamese brightness with the rich flavors typical of Gulf Coast seafood boils.
For now, the sauce is available only at the Bellaire Boulevard location before expanding to the restaurant’s other locations later.
Seafood Favorites from Crawfish Cafe
Crawfish Cafe’s menu focuses on bold seafood dishes inspired by Gulf Coast cuisine.
Popular items include:
- Crawfish cheese bread
- Oyster nachos
- Fried seafood platters
- Custom seafood boils with crawfish, shrimp, corn, sausage, and potatoes
The restaurant also offers “Smack Packs,” which are large combination meals that include Cajun rice, shrimp, sausage, boiled eggs, and their signature Smack Sauce.
More than 20 side dishes are available as well, including garlic bread, hush puppies, fried okra, and grits.
Traditional Vietnamese Dishes from Pho Prime
On the Vietnamese side, Pho Prime offers a wide range of traditional dishes.
The menu includes:
- 16 varieties of pho such as oxtail, beef short rib, shrimp, and chicken
- Vermicelli bowls with grilled meats and vegetables
- Fresh spring rolls
- Classic banh mi sandwiches
There is also a plant-based option called Pho Chay, made with vegan broth, tofu, shiitake mushrooms, and bok choy.
Another popular item is the Pho French Dip sandwich, which combines brisket, garlic herb butter, spicy aioli, and hoisin sauce with beef broth for dipping.
Cocktails and Drinks Inspired by New Orleans
A central bar serves as the drink station for the entire restaurant.
The beverage menu includes both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.
Popular options include:
- Mango dragonfruit tea
- Lychee lemonade
- Thai tea
- Egg coffee
- Coconut coffee
The cocktail list reflects New Orleans inspiration with drinks such as:
- Cajun Bloody Mary
- Lychee Mai Tai
- Lemongrass Mule
- New Orleans Lemonade
Interestingly, this marks a change for Pho Prime, since its other locations do not serve alcohol.
Opening During Peak Crawfish Season
The timing of the new restaurant is ideal, as it arrives during the peak of crawfish season in Texas and Louisiana.
Houston’s Viet-Cajun cuisine has gained national attention in recent years, blending Vietnamese flavors with Cajun seafood traditions.
The new Bellaire Boulevard location gives fans of both Crawfish Cafe and Pho Prime a larger, more immersive place to enjoy this unique food culture.
