A disturbing discovery in Northern California has led to a murder investigation and charges against a Vallejo man after authorities found a body burning near a rural roadway. Investigators say the victim, a 29-year-old Vallejo resident, was killed in a separate location before his body was transported and set on fire near the Lake Herman Recreation Area.

Body Found Burning Near Lake Herman Recreation Area
Authorities in Solano County launched a homicide investigation on February 9, 2026, after firefighters responded to reports of a fire along a roadway near Lake Herman Recreation Area.
According to officials, the Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched just after 5:00 a.m. to investigate a fire in an unincorporated area of the county.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a human body engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews quickly extinguished the fire while deputies from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office secured the scene and began an investigation.
Victim Identified as Vallejo Resident
Investigators later identified the victim as Damarrea Neal, a 29-year-old resident of Vallejo, California.

According to investigators, the homicide itself occurred in the 1900 block of Griffin Drive in Vallejo, not at the rural site where the remains were discovered.

Suspect Arrested While Driving Victim’s Vehicle
During the investigation, law enforcement learned that a possible suspect had already been taken into custody by the Emeryville Police Department on unrelated charges.
Police identified the suspect as Marquis Davis, a 39-year-old Vallejo resident.
Authorities said Davis was reportedly driving Neal’s vehicle at the time of his arrest, which helped connect him to the homicide investigation.
Murder Charges Filed
On March 5, 2026, the Solano County District Attorney’s Office formally filed charges against Davis.
The charges include:

- Firearm use enhancement
- Prior strike allegation

Suspect Previously Convicted of Murder
Authorities also confirmed that Davis has a prior murder conviction from 2007.
He was originally sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for that crime.

Davis was released from prison in January 2025, about a year before Neal’s death.
