Daniel Dubois is once again the world heavyweight champion after a thrilling, back-and-forth victory over Fabio Wardley on Saturday to capture the WBO title. Dubois claimed the belt in a dramatic 11th-round stoppage, in a fight that will likely be remembered as one of the year’s most exciting bouts.
A Fight of Grit and Resilience
The contest started explosively as Wardley floored Dubois just 10 seconds into the fight with a devastating right hand that landed behind Dubois’ ear. However, the British fighter quickly recovered and responded with fierce pressure and heavy shots, which allowed him to dominate the second round.
“I had to get back up and come back harder, man. I’m a warrior,” Dubois said afterward, referring to the early knockdown as a “flash knockdown.”
More Knockdowns and Rising to the Challenge
In the third round, Wardley again unleashed a powerful right hand, this time following up with a jab, causing Dubois to stumble and take another knee for a count. Despite the setback, Dubois once again rose to his feet, and from then on, he found his rhythm, firing back with thudding shots of his own while Wardley’s energy began to fade.
Momentum Shifts in Dubois’ Favor
From Round 4 onward, Dubois gained momentum, as Wardley’s power shots became less frequent due to his increasing fatigue. Dubois took advantage of his opponent’s exhaustion, landing punches with more regularity while Wardley struggled to maintain the same level of aggression.
Despite the relentless onslaught from Dubois, Wardley remained dangerous, landing powerful counter punches whenever possible. However, as the rounds progressed, Wardley’s resilience began to wear thin. His face was battered, with a severe cut on his nose and swelling around his eye, but he kept fighting on.
Stoppage in the 11th Round
Finally, in the 11th round, Dubois landed a massive shot that caused the referee, whose shirt was soaked in Wardley’s blood, to step in and stop the fight. Though Wardley had never been knocked down, his condition was deteriorating, and the referee ended the battle to protect him from further damage.
Dubois’ Gratitude and Determination
After the fight, Dubois expressed his gratitude to Wardley for the hard-fought battle, saying, “It was a war. Thank you, Fabio, for that. Thank you. I had to pull out the bag, rely on it and use all my skills. What a great fight. What a great battle, man, but I’m number one again.”
Dubois Reclaims Championship for the Second Time
With this victory, Dubois became heavyweight champion for the second time in his career. He had previously been promoted from interim IBF champ to full champ after defeating Anthony Joshua but lost his title in a 2023 undisputed championship bout against Oleksandr Usyk, marking his second career knockout loss.
Potential Rematch and Future Plans
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that there is a rematch clause in the contract, so a Dubois vs. Wardley 2 could be in the cards. However, Usyk, who had expressed interest in fighting the winner of Saturday’s fight, could also be a potential opponent for Dubois as he looks to cement his status as one of the top heavyweights in the world.
