A 17-year-old boy from LaPlace has been arrested after being linked to two early morning burglaries at local businesses. The case has drawn attention because police were able to act quickly using CCTV footage and alert patrolling officers, leading to the suspect’s arrest within a short time.
Burglary at Dollar General Store
The first incident took place around 1:34 a.m. on Thursday, April 16. Deputies from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary alarm at a Dollar General store located on West Airline Highway in LaPlace.
According to officials, surveillance footage showed a person inside the store wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans, and burgundy shoes. The suspect was seen trying to remove a cash register before running away from the scene.
Suspect Found Nearby
Soon after the first burglary, a deputy noticed a person matching the same description in a nearby parking lot. The individual was identified as Hayden Cook, a 17-year-old from the area.
Police stopped him for questioning, and after further investigation, he was taken into custody.
Second Break-In at Restaurant
Around 3:12 a.m., while checking nearby businesses, a deputy found an open door at El Paso Restaurant on U.S. 51. Although no one was inside at that time, further investigation revealed that another burglary had taken place.
The restaurant owner later shared CCTV footage showing a man entering through the front door and leaving through a side door with a cash register drawer. Additional video footage showed the suspect trying to break open the register using a tool outside the building.
Confession and Police Response
During questioning, Cook admitted to carrying out both burglaries. His confession helped officers quickly close both cases.
Mike Tregre praised the officers for their quick thinking and dedication. He said the team did not stop after solving one case and continued checking nearby businesses, which helped them uncover the second burglary as well.
Charges and Current Status
Cook is now facing serious charges, including two counts of simple burglary, theft, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, and damage to property. He is currently being held in the parish jail, with a bond set at $61,500.
