Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has rejected a proposal from several state sheriffs to create a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants. DeSantis expressed his opposition during an event in Bradenton, arguing that the idea conflicts with existing immigration laws and enforcement priorities.
DeSantis Rejects Path to Citizenship Proposal
At the event, DeSantis addressed the proposal made by members of the State Immigration Enforcement Council, which includes local sheriffs like Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. The council, created under Florida law, suggested that a pathway to legal status be considered for noncriminal undocumented immigrants who meet certain conditions.
DeSantis responded, “This idea that unless you’re an axe murderer you should be able to stay, that is not consistent with our laws, and it’s also not good policy.”
The governor’s statement highlights his firm stance on adhering to current immigration laws and policies that prioritize strict enforcement.
Sheriffs’ Proposal Sparks Debate Among Republicans
The proposal marks a shift for some members of the State Immigration Enforcement Council, who previously supported stricter enforcement. Grady Judd, who chairs the council, argued that the proposal reflected the realities faced by local law enforcement.
Judd emphasized that there are undocumented individuals living in the state who are hardworking, not violating the law, and are contributing to society. He described the proposal as “common sense,” with suggestions like fines, employment requirements, and other conditions for eligibility.
Divisions Within Florida GOP on Immigration Policy
The disagreement over immigration policy has revealed divisions among Florida Republicans. While DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier have doubled down on enforcement of existing laws, other officials, including some sheriffs, are pushing for a more lenient approach.
Uthmeier rejected the idea earlier this week, stressing that individuals in the state illegally are breaking the law and need to be removed.
“We are going to enforce it,” Uthmeier said at a separate news conference.
Current Florida Immigration Approach
DeSantis defended Florida’s current approach to immigration, which includes expanded cooperation with federal agencies and increased funding for law enforcement. He expressed the need to continue building on the momentum of existing policies.
“We’ve got to keep the momentum going, we certainly don’t want to backtrack on this,” DeSantis emphasized.
Support for a More Compassionate Approach
Supporters of the proposal argued that Florida’s current immigration enforcement practices sometimes result in the removal of individuals with no criminal records, including long-term residents who have families and jobs in the state. These supporters suggested that more thoughtful policies could address these concerns while maintaining law and order.
Some council members have also expressed frustration with the lack of federal direction on immigration priorities, leading local officials to navigate the issue on their own without clear guidance from Washington.
