The incident happened on Monday around noon in a parking lot on the 9700 block of Harper Avenue in Detroit. Tonya Charisse-Annice Johnson, 41, had arrived at the location to pick up a DoorDash order from a nearby restaurant.
According to police reports, Johnson left her five children inside the vehicle while she went into the restaurant. The children were between the ages of 2 and 11 years old.
Authorities say there was also a handgun inside the vehicle that was not safely stored. During the time their mother was away, the 11-year-old son reportedly found the firearm.
